A resilient team capable of thriving in an AI-enhanced work environment while maintaining essential human qualities.
Leadership is rooted in influence.
In principle, leadership can apply to individuals with influence over others. In organizations, leaders are appointed to create the highest impact and hold accountability. Most effective leaders are highly relational and consistently deliver performance through influence, while employing emotional intelligence can build trust, manage difficult discussions and enhance team performance. Organizations tend to invest in technical skills over emotional intelligence, which often neglects the need to ensure leaders develop a well-rounded set of emotional competencies; for example, from Daniel Goleman's model, five key components of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills.
Leadership is a nuance.
The leader uniquely and precisely influences individuals who can be led as they understand a need. Person A will need different instruction than person B. Today, most work is automated as we enter the AI era; what do leaders need to do differently to succeed?

Empirical evidence supports emotional intelligence remains a cornerstone of leadership skills in technology-driven environments such as recent artificial intelligence (AI) and managing AI-human interactions (Yap, 2024), building trust and transparency (Hwang, 2024) and fostering a positive technology adoption culture (Zhang & Huang, 2024) with an AI-ready mindset. While existing research has explored EI in AI-driven organizations, there is a lack of studies and training programmes that specifically examine how leaders with emotional intelligence can navigate AI integration strategies so that they remain influential while leveraging AI appropriately.
Strategies to stay updated on AI advancements, tailor your leadership style to bridge the gap between AI systems and human team members and ensure that AI use aligns with organizational values and ethical standards are vital now.
The Most Important Skill That Remains Uniquely Human: Emotional Resilience
Emotional resilience is crucial to prepare yourself and your team for the rapid changes AI integration may bring. Here are a few tips you can implement with your team:
- Promote emotional literacy learning to expand individuals' emotional intelligence, especially in an AI-driven workplace.
- Conduct emotional intelligence workshops focusing on adaptability and stress management in the face of technological change.
- Provide feedback with empathy and comfort to team members when AI integration in decision-making and projects causes anxiety and uncertainty.
- Utilize AI-driven analytics to identify areas where your team may need additional support during the transition. As a leader, use this information to build trust and transparency throughout the process.
The Future of Leadership is Here
Whitney Houston reminded us "Children are our future, let them show the way"...
The next few years will be critical for leaders who wish to remain relevant and practical. By embracing the partnership between emotional intelligence and artificial intelligence (treat them like your child), you can position yourself at the forefront of this leadership revolution.
I focus on supporting next-generation business leaders in integrating emotional intelligence with artificial intelligence. You may have a different view of this article that can provide insight for the next article. Let's connect and share your view on this new era of AI-human collaboration.
