If conflict resolution had a passport, it would map out a practical journey, not a one-off event. Skill-building in this area demands practice, reflection, tracking, and a sense of challenge. Preparation and practice are key to success.
From my work with leaders, I see unresolved conflict recurring for a reason—it's about ownership. Resolution begins when we shift from a “me” to a “we” mindset. Executives who succeed don’t just identify and tackle issues. They commit to adapting their behaviours, preparing to match others’ communication styles, and staying willing to adjust as dialogue unfolds. They don’t give up until they find a solution. These are the hallmarks not just of a negotiator but of an inspiring leader.
My methodology combines several core elements:
- The 4R Principles: Recognition, Respect, Reconciliation, Resolve
- The Challenge Map (inspired by Dr Basudar)
- Dialect Styles: Result-driven, Relationship-driven, Rationale-driven approaches (Relationship Awareness Theory)
- Dialogue Skills: Presence, Respect, Express, Suspend, Absorb (PRESA) (learnt from Potential Dialogue)
- S.A.F.E. Steps: Share, Ask, Frame, Explore
Anyone can master these—not through academic theory, but through courage, curiosity, and a willingness to unlearn. This means overcoming the “fool’s choice”—the belief that venting anger or going silent are our only options when the stakes are high. The smart choice is to dive into conflict with compassion and the awareness that everyone brings their own struggles. At the heart of this process is respect—humans sense it instinctively.
At training, participants will receive a structured guide to practice new behaviours, adapt communication styles, and reflect on what each conversation teaches. When you use the 4R model and S.A.F.E. steps, map your challenges, identify stakeholder dialects, and activate PRESA skills, you move closer to productive solutions.
