From StarTrek Dreams to Corporate and MedTech Mentoring

As AI transforms healthcare and the future of work, I reflect on how Star Trek: The Next Generation inspired a dream that grew into meaningful product management leadership in MedTech—and why human-centred digital leaders are urgently needed.
AI, MedTech, and the Future of Work — We are experiencing the moment when science fiction finally feels like science fact. In the MedTech sector, AI is now advancing across most parts of the care continuum: from wearables and imaging to laboratory diagnostics, physiological patient monitoring, virtual health assistance, and surgical robotics.
With an ageing population, about one in six people is now over 65, compared with one in eleven in 2019. AI-enabled wearables alone could help save an estimated 400,000 lives and up to 200 billion Euros annually, freeing scarce healthcare professionals to focus on high-value, human-centric care. Virtual health assistants could free up as much as 1 billion hours of clinician time each year, reducing burnout while enhancing access.
As the American Hospital Association stated back in 2019, AI, machine learning, and robotic process automation will fundamentally change how almost everyone in hospitals and health systems performs their roles. The first step is not just deploying tools but recognising the true value of data and generating meaningful insights through analytics—because that is where genuine value, for both patients and professionals, truly resides.
From Star Trek Dream to Product Manager Reality — My journey into this AI‑enabled MedTech began at university, when I rented a studio and watched Star Trek: The Next Generation every week. I was captivated by Beverly Crusher and Wesley’s handheld devices that could diagnose patients in seconds, and by Deanna Troi’s role as a counsellor who combined insight, empathy, and strategy on the bridge.
I secretly aspired to a role like Deanna Troi—helping leaders see clearly, navigate complexity, and make better decisions. That dream developed over 15 years as I served several Asia Pacific presidents in clinical-focused marketing director roles across therapies such as catheter-based delivery systems, drug-eluting stents, coated balloons, multiple generations of pacemakers and defibrillators, and EP systems.
From launch to market, my responsibilities went far beyond products or campaigns. I recall donning a trusted “counsellor” hat when bringing different perspectives to the table, aligning cross-functional teams, and translating clinical evidence into market opportunities that delivered valuable benefits for the business.
Turning Experience into Meaningful Work — As the digital age advanced, I saw Roddenberry’s imagined universe gradually merge with our reality. The devices and data streams I once admired on screen now increasingly appeared in cath labs, hospital wards, and patients’ homes. However, the greatest gap I noticed was not in technology but in leadership: Are we sufficiently preparing people to lead ethically, clearly, and compassionately in a data-rich, AI-enabled world?
That question transformed my career. The focus on product launches and titles became less important than the opportunity to cultivate the next generation of product managers and leaders who can combine clinical insight, commercial sense, and emotional intelligence. When done well, product management is not just about roadmaps and features; it involves guiding innovations that genuinely improve healthcare locally and managing stakeholder tensions to achieve optimal outcomes.
Today, through my work, I aim to help emerging leaders develop the mindset and skillset to thrive in this environment: intellectually curious, comfortable with ambiguity, data-literate, and deeply humane. These are the digital leaders who will ensure AI enhances, rather than diminishes, trust and care within healthcare systems.
